How to Build a CV From Scratch in South Africa (No Experience Needed)

Most CV guides assume you already have a CV to work from. This one doesn't. Here's how to build a professional, ATS-friendly CV completely from scratch — even if you've never had a job, don't have a laptop, and have no idea where to start.

If you've never had a CV before, the whole process can feel overwhelming. What do you include? How do you format it? What if you don't have a computer? These are the questions we hear most often from South African job seekers starting from zero — and they all have answers.

The good news: building a CV from scratch in 2026 is easier than it's ever been. You don't need Word, you don't need a laptop, and you don't need years of experience. What you need is a clear structure, the right information, and a tool that understands what South African employers are actually looking for.

60%

of South African job seekers aged 18-25 say they don't have access to a laptop or desktop computer at home. If that's you — a phone is all you need.

What Goes on a CV When You Have Nothing?

This is the question that stops most first-time CV builders. The answer: more than you think. A CV is not just a list of jobs. It's a document that shows a recruiter what you know, what you can do, and what kind of person you are at work. Even if you've never been employed, you have all three.

What to include when starting from scratch

  • Your full name and contact details (email, phone, city)
  • A professional summary — 2-3 sentences about what you can offer and what you are looking for
  • Your education — matric, any diplomas, certificates, or courses
  • Any work-like experience — internships, holiday jobs, informal work, family business
  • Volunteer work, community involvement, church roles, sports leadership
  • Skills — both technical (computer, driving, languages) and professional (communication, organisation)
  • References — even a teacher, community leader, or family employer counts

The 6 Sections Every South African CV Must Have

1. Header — Your Name and Contact Details

Your full legal name goes at the very top in capitals. Below it: your city and province, phone number, and email address. That's all. No photo, no ID number, no date of birth — these are not required on a South African CV and can actually hurt your application at EE-compliant employers.

2. Professional Summary

This is 2-3 sentences that answer the question: who are you professionally and what are you looking for? Write it in third person (not "I am" — rather "Motivated recent graduate" or "Hardworking administrative assistant"). Include the job title you want and one or two of your strongest qualities.

Example for a first-time job seeker

"Motivated Matric graduate from Soweto with strong communication skills and experience in customer service through informal retail work. Seeking a first opportunity in administration or retail to apply practical people skills in a structured professional environment."

3. Education

List your highest qualification first. Include the name of the institution, the qualification, and the year you completed or expect to complete it. If you passed matric with distinctions or strong subject results, include them. If you have any additional certificates — first aid, computer skills, driver's licence — list those too.

4. Skills

Split your skills into two categories: Technical Skills (computer programmes, languages spoken, equipment operated) and Professional Skills (communication, problem-solving, teamwork — but only if you can back them up with an example). Recruiters and ATS systems both scan this section for keyword matches.

5. Experience (Even if It's Informal)

Don't skip this section just because you haven't had a formal job. Holiday work at a family store, helping at church events, cutting hair for neighbours, coaching a junior sports team — all of this is real experience. Format it the same way as a formal job: Role | Organisation | Dates | 2-3 bullet points describing what you did.

6. References

You need at least one reference who can speak to your character and work ethic. A teacher, a community leader, a religious leader, a coach, or someone you've done informal work for all qualify. Include their name, their relationship to you, and their contact number. Always ask permission before listing someone as a reference.

Why ATS Formatting Matters Even for First-Time Job Seekers

You might think ATS filters are only a problem for experienced professionals. They're not. Entry-level job postings on Pnet and CareerJunction receive hundreds of applications — and every single one goes through the same automated filter before a recruiter sees it.

A two-column Canva template that looks professional to you reads as broken data to the ATS. A CV built in a basic Word document with a single column, clear headings, and the right keywords will outperform a beautiful design every time.

The most common mistake first-time CV builders make

Using a graphic design template from Canva, Pinterest, or a free download site. These templates are built to impress humans — not to pass ATS software. Most two-column, icon-heavy templates fail ATS parsing entirely and are rejected before anyone reads your name.

How to Build Your CV From Your Phone

You do not need a computer to build a professional CV. Our CV builder is designed for mobile — you answer questions on your phone, and the AI builds your CV for you. It uses your answers to write professional language, structure the content correctly, and format everything to South African ATS standards.

The whole process takes about 10-15 minutes. At the end, your completed CV is delivered to your email as a Word document (.docx) — ready to send to any employer or upload to Pnet, CareerJunction, or LinkedIn.

What you need to build your CV on your phone

  • Your phone — that's it
  • Your email address (to receive the finished CV)
  • Basic information: your name, address, phone number
  • Your education history (school name, qualification, year)
  • Any experience you have — formal or informal
  • A list of 5-10 skills you have
  • One reference contact

What Happens After You Build Your CV

Once your CV is built, you can download it immediately and start applying. But before you do, it's worth running a quick ATS scan to see how it scores against South African employer standards. The scan takes 60 seconds and tells you exactly what keywords are missing and what to fix before your first application.
